Perfect day for a walk so Jenny & I go to Emsworth Harbour for a stroll by the water in countryside. We walked around the harbour and followed the footpath along the estuary for a couple of miles enjoying the weather and the scenery. On our return walk, in the middle of a good chin wag we both heard a metal clunk sound coming from the water . Looking out into the estuary we observed a small sailing dingy with it's mast bent in half and the sailor of the dingy in the water holding on to the back of the dingy. I queried to Jenny, "should the mast look like that" reply "no, but he must be ok he's not waving his arms about" Almost immediately the man in water begins waving his about and shouting "Hello" Jenny resplies "Are you OK, do you need help" his urgent reply "Yes I need help". Jenny and I do a quick assessment of the situation and immediately determine he's too far away for us to swim to his aid and besides the water is too bloody cold. I say, should we call 911, Jenny calmly replies it's 999 in the UK, so we do. Emergency services answer:
Question: Nature of the emergency
Jenny: Man in water clinging to his boat, mast broken, drifting swiftly with the wind. He's yelling for help.
Question: Location please
Jenny: Somewhere near Emsworth Harbour along the footpath
Question: Are you near the pub ( We're thinking he's checking to see if we've been drinking)
Jenny: No
Question: Name of the road you're near
Jenny: Don't know the name, we're on the footpath along the water at Emsworth. (We're not from around here)
Question: Which direction is the harbour
Jenny: Don't know it's to my left
Question: Is he drifting, if so try to keep up with him
Jenny immediately yells at me to keep along side him, I start jogging along the path to keep up with him.
Question: Which direction is he floating
Jenny: I'm facing the water and he's floating from right to left.
Emergency services tell Jenny the helicopter has been dispatched will locate us, stay on the line.
Man and boat started drifting towards the shore
Man reaches shallow waters and begins pulling boat to shore
Man & boat reach shore
Emergency services request to speak to the man, they ask if he's OK. He his stating he's fine and no longer needs help. Emergency services tell him they're going to finish the rescue anyway they need the practice. So the helicopter arrives, hovers above us so the rescue boat can see where he's at. The boat comes racing accross the water, sees us and the chopper leaves. By this time quite a few people have gathered from houses close by. After the distressed man thanked us Jenny and I headed back into town laughing all the way. What excitement!!! It's not every day one has to call air sea rescue while on a walk in the countryside. All ended well, other than the man's pride he knew a couple of the guys in the rescue boat, they were really ribbing him about falling out of his boat.
\Question:
Haha! Great story Pam!
